Mission Accomplished: 41, 265km of Car Free Trips, 7.015 tonnes of GHG emissions avoided
From August 9 to October 31, 954 participants challenged for a finalist spot in the inaugural Car Free Game (CFG) by going car-free and avoiding 7,105kg of land transport emissions, surpassing our campaign's target of 6.0t CO2e.
In total, 65 met the qualifying mark of recording at least 60km of active mobility trips on MOVE&JOY app and 38 men and women appeared at The Canopy at GENEO on 8 Nov for the exciting Grand Final.
Over 2 hour-long battle-royale, players were tested on their balance, coordination, teamwork, endurance and knowledge of 2030 Green Plan and active mobility laws.
Luck and strategy also played a major part in whether players were eliminated or progress to the next game. Players were also given a 'revive' wristband - usable only once for the first 3 games - that allows them to 'rejoin' the tournament if they are eliminated early. After Round 4 & 5, there was also an "X or O" segment where remaining players can choose X (to end tournament for a lesser prize) or O (to continue the tournament). If any player chose 'X', the tournament would end immediately. In both 'X or O' segments, all players chose to continue to play for the grand prize of S$1,888.
This was how the 'Squid Game meets Beast Games' finale unfolded:
Red Light Stop! Green Light Go!
Inspired by Squid Game's Red Light Green Light, players can only move when they hear "Green Light Go". Whenever they hear "Red Light Stop", their feet must be on the grey sections of the 'course'. Last person to reach the finish line were eliminated.
Hot Potato Bucket Challenge
With 30 Players remaining, three teams of 10 were formed. Strangers became comrades as the team with the lowest score is eliminated. With each player only having one ball (aka hot potato), no player wants to be the one who miss. To add to the difficulty, if your ball ends in the other team's bucket, it's an added point for your opponent.
The team that was eliminated ironically threw balls into buckets belonging to opposing 2 teams ! Talk about scoring an 'own goal' not once but twice !
Near or Far Shuttle Run
Game 3 is a 1 v 1 challenge where Players have to retrieve rings from 8 cones in a straight line. First Player to recover all rings wins. The twist is one player must go "Near" (pick the ring from nearest cone to the furthest) while his or her opponent must go 'Far" (pick the ring from furthest cone to nearest cone).
In normal circumstances, the Player who pick "Far" will usually win. By winning the pre-race coin toss, the winner of the coin toss can decide whether to go "Near" or "Far".
Many of the races were neck to neck and some came from behind to edge out a close win. Eventual champion Player #035 who was trailing throughout her race dived to the finish to edge out her opponent in a 'photo-finish'
Shapes' Shuttle Run
Game 4 saw the remaining field facing off in pairs. One player must retrieve rings from a "Umbrella-shape" run course, while his or her opponent must get rings from a "Circle-shaped" course. In normal circumstances, the player who got the more complicated "Umbrella course" will lose. However some players showed great flexibility, agility and raw speed to triumph and eliminate their opponents whatever shape they picked.
Blind Man March
Game 5 is a test of balance where the remaining 11 players must march on their designated floor tile blindfolded. Those who stepped outside of their assigned tile while marching were eliminated. In a tense game, Player #035 (Jemy Chong) and Player #036 Tan Wee Lee advanced to the sixth and final game.
Race to Geneo
The 6th and final game see the 2 remaining players throwing a dice or answering questions on active mobility and 2030 Green Plan in order to advance to the GENEO mural tile at centre of The Canopy's event plaza.
After a tense 10-minute back and forth battle which saw both players having equal chances of securing victory, Jemy finally edged it, and won the top prize of $1,888 cash.
For correctly predicting that Player #035 will be the eventual winner, 17-year-old Javier Tan who was eliminated after 4 rounds rode away with an ASCENT Bolt mini-velo.
